What is this?
Operating Self is a collection of essays, observations and tools about what shapes the quality of our thinking, and how we can become more deliberate about what we let shape it. It’s written by me, Dom.
Who are you?
I’ve spent all of my working life thinking about ideas. How you find them, what makes them good, and what makes certain ones stick.
After leaving a job of 10 years, I started questioning how much of my thinking, perceptions and understanding had been influenced by outside forces, and how I could have more agency over them.
That led to me starting Operating Self.
What’s the goal of OS?
To give you ideas, observations and tools that (hopefully) improve the quality of your thinking.
In other words: make your self known.
What does that actually mean?
It means noticing more of what is acting on us - the ideas we inherit, the things we pay attention to, the places we spend our time, the things that encourage or dull our curiosity.
With more agency over that, we can make more deliberate choices about how we think and live.
Why does that matter?
Because I believe the quality of our thinking shapes the quality of our lives.
What will you find here?
Operating Self is where I’ll put the ideas I find along the way into words and, eventually, into useful things that I hope you’ll find helpful too.
Thanks for reading.
Dom
I made this cool thing underneath but don’t know where to put it so I’m leaving it here.
